Blackbeard I Poem

I am Blackbeard.

I am strong, fearless, and mysterious.

I live in Bath, NC or on the Ocean in my magnificent ship.

I wonder how much loot will be on my next capture or if the ship will be worth stealing.

I hear sea gull cawing, waves crashing, my crew’s sea shanties, though sometimes I hear screams of pain, cannons firing, and many men cursing.

I see a never ending blue abyss; the look of fear in the eyes of those I kill, capture, and steal from every day.

I want all the gold, pieces of eight, silver, and other goods in the seven seas all to myself.

I am strong, fearless, and mysterious.

I am Blackbeard.

I question whether I will survive my next battle, not really I only question what goods I shall split with my crew.

I feel vivacious, ready to take on the world, and fearless in every move I make.

I touch the sails of my ship knowing I am the captain and I am the most feared pirate of all.

I worry about trusting others so I and the devil are the only ones who know where my treasure is buried and only the longest liver shall take it!

I cry… I never cry I am too strong for crying and I am fearless so nothing is worth crying over.

I understand how to win my battles, survive alone, keep a secret, trick my enemies, and make everyone fear me.

I am strong, fearless, and mysterious.

I am Blackbeard.

I say arrrggghh, it’s wonderful to be a pirate, and only I shall know where my treasure is.

I believe I am the best pirate alive, actually I know this because everyone fears me yet no one has been able to kill me.

I dream about all the gold I have, what my next conquer will have upon it, and where I shall

burry my next treasure.

I try to always out do everyone around me, and to scare all of those I conquer.

I hope to live as a pirate forever, and to have treasure of abounding limits.

I was once the leading pirate of my time.

But now I am just a legend that people have trouble believing in because of all the legends surrounding my death in that final battle against Lt. Maynard.

Double Entry Diary…What If You Met a Pirate? & Jake Carpenter

I like the DED for many reasons. It mainly is because it allows the reader to make connections inside and outside of the story using many different techniques. The DED allows the reader to make connections by using what they have read and what they already know. The DED also allows students to provided an opinion about the text that they are reading. The DED is set up in two columns where the reader uses one to put what the book meant to them and the other is about the book. The student can draw pictures in the DED to make and inference about what they think. I like the way the DED is broken down so that every student can either work at their own pace or they can stay with the class. The students are given a set number of pages to read at one time and the follow up with the DED activity for that section of pages. I think that this is a wonderful tool to use to get children interested and familiar with how to understand the harder text like non fiction and historical fiction stories. I feel that this is one of many tools we have been introduced to in this class that I plan on making use of in my future classroom.

Integrating Instructional-Level Social Studies Trade Books

This article opened my eyes to the many all so common mistakes that many teachers make when putting books into their classrooms. Often times teachers only have books on the level and above in their classrooms and they forget about those students who are struggling readers. As teachers we often forget about those that are struggling to read and understand what they are reading. These readers need to be encouraged and we can help do this by providing a range of reading levels in our classrooms. This will show those students that they are smart and also encourage them to continue reading by providing them self-confidence or at least a way of building self confidence.

We can be the shinning lights for a struggling students learning life. We can help a student by helping them improve their reading skills just by providing different level texts in our classroom. As we have talked more and more about this issue in class I have to say that it has really sank in. We can provide different level reading groups in which I can help each level of students learn whether it be to help them catch up with those in their class or keep those above and beyond challenged and interested.

I plan on having a range of books on different levels in my classroom. I want to help my students to be challenged and want to learn. I plan on helping my students to learn how read and improve their own reading. I want to be that one teacher that students are always glad that they had the one that they are so grateful for because they help them to learn something that they have been struggling with.

Shared Readings

As I read this article I learned how to implement different types of reading in my classroom and how to teach children to use the clues in their reading to learn what a word means. Last semester I learn alot about different types of shared readings, but after reading this article I really understood more about shared readings. Shared readings are way of keeping students interest and engaged in the lessons that you are teaching. As I read this article I found that I really like how examples of teachers real ideas and experiences were used are teaching tools.

I like to part of the article that the teacher mentions how context clues and references are important to be used to learn the meaning of words. I liked the part about the teacher wanting her students to learn to have a inside and outside word strategies. This is like understanding how to use the clues around the word to figure out its meaning and also using the word itself to understand the meaning of the word. I thought that this was a wonderful idea in that it shows students to rely on the information that they already know to build on and learn something new.

Another important thing that was in this text was about using text structure to understand the information in the reading. This shows students how to understand what is important in the text that they are reading. We as teachers have to show them how to use the italicized words, bold words, and headings to understand what they are reading. After reading this article I can say I feel more confident on shared reading and how to use it in my classroom.

After reading this article I began to think about my own future classroom. How would I see the things mentioned in this article in my own class? Well the more I thought about it the more I realized that I am going to have students on different levels of reading and spelling in my classroom. It made me think about how I will be using spelling words in my classroom along with different levels of words. I also began to realize that with different level learners I will be dealing with different levels of teaching each one of them. I have always wondered how to be implement reading and spelling in my classroom knowing that I will have different levels of learners.

This article made me think of when I was in elementary school how did my teachers use different levels to teach us spelling and reading. I remember in second grade being on an advanced level of spelling and receiving a different list of words from everyone else except for the two other girls on my level. Although I wonder how much this really help me because now I hate spelling and I am not that good at it. I remember we were sent out in the hall to do our spelling lessons on our own. We even took our tests in the hallway. So as for giving multiple level tests in the classroom I have heard of, but I definitely will not do it the way my second grade teacher did because I feel like I was dumb down after that year because I wasn’t challenged properly.

This article allowed me to see the best ways of implementing different level lessons in my classroom for my students. I really liked how Judy Brown an example of a weekly spelling lesson schedule in this article. I also really enjoyed the activities and lessons that were provided in this article.

I have say my fears is on the best way of implementing spelling in my classroom. Before I read this article this was one of my fears. I never wanted to discourage students who are more advanced the way I feel like my second grade teacher did to me. As I read this article I have to say I found some courage for this, but know that I am a worry wart by nature I am still a little worried.

The Not So Jolly Roger!!!

I really enjoyed this book! I actually had the opportunity to recommend this book and the many others in the series to a mother of twin boys that have aspergers. I think that my future students will enjoy this book also. I believe that this book offers interesting things for both boys and girls. The book is full of mystery, magic, intrigue, excitement, and history that students can all find some way to connect with the story.

I liked the way that with this book series there is an online website that allows us as future teachers to see lesson plans that we could adapt and use to teach with all the books in this series. I love how there is humor throughout the book to discuss the history of blackbeard and actually what he looks like too. I believe that this book is one of many wonderful teaching tools that I will be able to use in my classroom that includes technology, reading, writing, and many other important topics/subjects for my classroom.

This book is not only an enjoyable read it also makes the reader think, make predictions, and become more interest with each sentence. I love how Dr. Frye talked about this book in class and showed us how we should read this story in our on classrooms allowing the students to best understand the story.

Internet Workshop Pirates!!!

I enjoyed this article. It opened my eyes to preparing for our up coming pirate unit! I am not the most computer and internet savvy person, but this article taught me how to incorporate this kind of technology in my classroom. Using internet workshops is a wonderful of incorporating experience based learning along with inquiry lessons.

I think that students will learn many things including how to navigate the internet while learning how to determine if a website is a reliable source or not. These workshops are away to allow students to become more familiar with the internet and how to appropriately use this important technology in today’s society.

Using blogs is another important thing with these workshops because it allows students to express there opinions and using their style of writing to express those opinions. I believe that a blog opens the stage up for every student to be important in their lessons and what they are learning while communicating with their classmates. I really like the idea of the internet workshop and for me a not so technology savvy person I believe it would be wonderful to use to help my students become very technology savvy along with improving my own technology abilities!!

I really enjoyed reading these articles. I have always enjoyed history and anything to do with pirates. I have learned from these articles many different activities and lessons that I can use with a pirate unit in my own classroom. I love how learning about the pirates is not only a purpose classroom activity, but also one that the students can venture around the room learning more on their own.

I love the idea of the Pirate Notebooks. This is a great way for students to continue to build on what they already know along with staying organized. The pull-out reading is a wonderful idea for students to continue reading something they enjoy along with learning/improving their reading skills all at the same time. I feel that the pull out provides the students the opportunity to learn how to be better readers, note takers, and test takers without making it open or obvious. I would love to use the pirate theme in my own classroom in the future.
